Is it any wonder I sometimes miss saving?





Nope, doesn’t look like any wonder to me.
What makes me laugh is the fact that web apps are doing a much better job of this. In most everything desktop programming is better, except for this. I think that says something about the “saving” process. Most likely it shouldn’t exist. It should just save for you, and keep unlimited undo history, because…. why not?
I think we got in this pattern from the days where IO was so much slower than anything else. But now we’re more or less used to this metaphor, and I don’t think it’s going to change any time soon. But it should. If nothing else, any modern OS could automatically save to a temporary folder even if you say you don’t want to save. There’s no excuse for losing data these days.
